- Radio your director or another coach to take over your group.
- You will accompany the injured athlete to the clinic at the Winter Park base.
5. Notify the Comp Center Office
- Provide the athlete’s name.
- If required by Patrol or the Clinic, ask the office to send the“ Consent to Medical Treatment” form to the clinic.
6. Stay with the Athlete
- Do not leave until the parent or guardian arrives.
7. Complete Required Reports
- All coaches who witness an injury must complete:
- A Ski Patrol Accident Report (available next to the Denver Health Clinic).
- A Comp Center Accident Report (available in the main Comp Center Office).
- Both forms must be completed the same day as the injury.
8. Special Cases
Head Injuries
- Notify the office immediately to place the athlete on the Head Injury/Concussion List.
- Parents must have a doctor evaluate the athlete and complete the required medical releases before the athlete may return.
- Forms are available in the office.

Athlete Concussion Protocol
If coach suspects a head injury, or if athlete reports symptoms after hitting their head, the athlete goes down in a sled with patrol – they CANNOT ski/ride down. Concussion symptoms can be robust, and we want to prevent another crash and potential further injury due to balance disturbances, depth perception issues, dizziness, etc.
1. Switch to Zone 1* channel 1, and say 6-00, 8-X0 (your name) (the “X” refers to your discipline’s radio call number). If you are at Mary Jane, call 6-10 for Mary Jane dispatch. You can also call the patrol at 970-726-1480. Upon the dispatcher’s reply, give the following details of the injured skier: male/female, adult/child, nature of injury, and specific location.
2. Stay with the injured skier until the ski patrol arrives. Do not move the skier!
3. Call the athlete’s parent/guardian. Contact info is available by searching Team Roster or Member Directory in the Member Portal (Ski Club Pro), which is accessible using your cell phone browser. https://winterpark.skiclubpro.com or contact the Comp Center office to get contact information or, if necessary, have the office notify the parents.
4. Radio your director or one of the other coaches to ask them to take your group while you accompany the injured skier to the clinic at the Winter Park base.
5. Contact the Comp Center office with the injured athlete's name and, if required by Patrol or the Clinic, have the office send the "Consent to Medical Treatment" medical release paperwork to the clinic.
6. Stay with the injured athlete until a parent has arrived.
7. All coaches who witness an accident causing an injury to a Comp Center athlete will be required to complete an accident report that can be obtained from the ski patrol office next to the Denver Health Clinic. The coach will also be required to fill out the Comp Center form available in the main Comp Center Office. Please be sure to fill out the Comp Center form in the office the same day as the injury.
8. After the athlete has been brought down to the ski patrol, notify the office to place the athlete on the Head Injury/Concussion list. Notify parents to have a doctor begin the medical evaluation and subsequent release. There are specific releases that are available from the office that need to be filled out by the doctor and returned to the office to be filed before the athlete can resume skiing with the Competition Center..
9. Notify parents that the athlete is now logged in the Concussion Protocol and the athlete must be seen by a MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL to be cleared—a signed form (available from the Comp Center office) from that professional must be filed with the Comp Center office before the athlete can return to any Comp Center related activities (races, dryland, practice, events, etc.)
If an athlete is at a competition and is suspected of having a concussion, the coach needs to follow the reporting procedures to place the athlete on concussion protocol. This includes filling out the Comp Center injury form! Email the office at ccenter@winterparkresort.com to notify us of the suspected concussion and request the injury form so you may fill it out as soon as possible. This also allows the office to send the family the concussion release to take to their medical provider.
THE WHY
It may seem drastic to bring the athlete down in a sled when they’ve hit their head and might be, or not be, showing/reporting symptoms, however it is Colorado State Law that the athlete be removed from play immediately until cleared by a doctor, to prevent further potentially long-term damage.
If an athlete were to ride down and, due to dizziness or disorientation, were to fall again, the athlete could be at risk for Post-Concussion Syndrome (where symptoms last for months if not years post-injury), Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (a degenerative brain disease that is a product of repetitive brain trauma), or Second Impact Syndrome (sudden severe brain swelling resulting in cell death). Symptoms may not show up immediately or may become worse over time.
Lost Athlete Protocol
At the beginning of the year, please speak with your athletes about what they should do if they get separated from the group.
Athletes should go to the nearest lift and have the lift operator call the Comp Center main office (x1590)
Give the lift operator their full name, coach’s name, and program
When you see that you have a missing athlete
-Go to the nearest lift to see if your athlete is there waiting for you
-Call the Comp Center office either via phone 970.726.1590 or radio Channel 1 Comp Center Admin
-Update the office that you have a missing athlete with the name of the athlete, your current location and where you are headed
-Give your contact information to the office so we know how to best reach you with athlete location updates
The office will reach out to you when they hear from either Patrol or Lifts with the location of the athlete to relay where to meet up.
