The Winter Park Freestyle Team is arguably the strongest team in the country. Last season, one of our premier athletes, Joel Hedrick, was named to the US Freestyle Ski team after winning several NorAm events and finishing 3rd overall on the NorAm Tour. Joel also qualified for Junior World Championships finishing 3rd in singles and 9th in duals as the US Ski Team athlete representative. Two of our premier female athletes, Kelly Lawson and Hallee Ray also competed in the NorAm Tour and placed 12th (Hallee) and 14th overall (Kelly). Our NorAm team is one of the largest in the country and continues to place athletes on the podium on this demanding tour. If you are a committed athlete looking to excel in the sport of freestyle moguls, Winter Park is the place to train, boasting a full-length, FIS specification mogul course right at the base December - April, 2 permanent aerial sites, and 3 additional mogul courses on the mountain.
The WPCC Fulltime Academy is an intensive year-round training program for the freestyle competitor with a total commitment toward reaching their highest goals in competitive freestyle skiing. Skiers train six days a week during the ski season. During the off-season, athletes participate in several summer camps and developmental programs while following a physical training regimen designed to prepare them for success during the ski season. A highly experienced coaching staff teaches the most current techniques of mogul skiing and aerials using the latest in video technology to help the athletes improve. Off-snow sessions include indoor trampoline sessions, water ramping sessions, physical conditioning, and mental skills training led by our Sports Performance specialist and Sports Psychologist Director, Stephanie Zavilla. (Access the Sports Performance webpage)
Winter training takes place in the mornings and / or afternoons Tuesdays through Thursdays, and all day Friday through Sunday. (East Grand Middle School students train the aforementioned days except for Wednesdays.) Local middle school and high school athletes enroll in the East Grand School District where schedules are arranged for core classes to take place in the morning, and student athletes are transported to the ski area at lunch time for afternoon training. East Grand is on a 4-day school week, so skiers have a full day of training on Friday - it doesn't get any better! Front Range Fulltime Academy athletes usually enroll in online classes.
