The Winter Park Freeski Team has produced top level athletes including 2014 Half Pipe Olympian Lyman Currier and the 2016 Youth Olympic Half Pipe Champion and US Rookie team member Birk Irving.
The Freeski Team - Park+Pipe is the program for begginers to experts skiers looking to improve their skills in park and pipe. The Freeski Park + Pipe programs are offered as a 1-day, 2-day, 3-day and Full-Time program. Great park skiers must have exceptional skiing skills, focusing on progression, safety, and fun. The Freeski team will train in the four parks of Jack Kendrick, Rerailer, Railyard, and Dark Territory, but will spend majority of their training time in the larger park, Dark Territory when athletes progress to this level. These are the parks where athletes will focus on sliding boxes and rails and furthering their air awareness skills in half-pipe and slopestyle.
Jack Kendrick is our starter park for those who are just learning the proper techniques of jumping and sliding boxes. Jack Kenndrick has multiple boxes and small rails all low to the ground and smaller jumps with the largest only being 25ft. This is a great place to safely learn how to jump and slide boxes/rails. Rerailer is a step up from Jack Kenndrick with slightly larger boxes and rails a little higher off the ground and a 30-35ft jump. This is the place for those that now know how to jump to start working on spins and grabs. Dark Territory is our largest park that is a pass required park with larger rails and jumps starting at 40ft up to 65ft. This is where you focus on your airawarness and technical larger tricks. This is also where the WP Freeski competitive teams will spend most of their time training. Railyard is the park where we have our larger rails located. When you have your basic of sliding boxes and rails this is the place to go to challenge your rail sliding skills. This program is a great place to learn and polish up on their skills needed for park and pipe. It also offers you the opportunity to do a wide variety of competitions (Slopestyle/Halfpipe). It is required that you be on the 2-day program or full time program to be on the competitive traveling team. The competitive team will work on goal setting, sports psychology, strength and flexibility. The majority of the competitions are USASA around the state. Some athletes will also attend some other competitions like the Revolution Tour, and the Aspen Open Park & Pipe open events. These events are AFP events (Association of Freesking Professionals). Athletes will need to purchase a USASA license http://www.usasa.org, and register for AFP recognition at http://afpworldtour.com for all other non USASA events. These are the events needed for the aspiring athlete who has dreams of the Dew Tour, X Games , or Olympics.
Summer training camps at Steamboat Springs water ramps, Park City water ramps and Windells at Mt. Hood in June for on snow are available to further the individual's training goals (these camps are not included in the program fee).
